Airing out my dirty laundry

Airing Out My Dirty Laundry, 2020
Muslin fabric, embroidery floss, scrap fabric, watercolor, string, clothes pins
73 x 65 x 10 inches

"Airing Out My Dirty Laundry" pulls from selected pages from my sketchbooks spanning from 2017-2020. Each piece is a hand-embroidered replication of an individual page from my collection. With a lot of time alone during this pandemic, I think many of us began fixating on the past. What had been, and what was lost. This series serves as an indulgence of that fixation: by painstakingly embroidering drawings from my past sketchbooks onto fraying pieces of cloth, I obsessively worked to replicate memorials to my past life. Sharing my sketchbooks, often feels like airing out one's dirty laundry, revealing, intriguing, and often times embarrassing. However, by removing the surrounding context of these sketchbook pages, the viewer only gets pieces of vulnerability, an experience not unlike to someone watching their neighbor hangup their clothes.
